It was a very hot day in Bucharest today and the quality of tennis was as high as the mercury bar in the thermometre, especially in the first semifinal between Monica Niculescu and Sara Errani. The two battled for over two hours under the sun, giving the crowd a worthy spectacle for a WTA semifinal, including uncountable drop shots, lobs and volleys. Both were very happy about their performances at the end of the match, but it was the first seed to come through 5-7 6-1 6-2, capturing her 18th career singles’ final.
The last obstacle between the Italian and her second title of the season is Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who beat Polona Hercog in straight sets, despite having found herself down of two breaks in the opening set. Surprisingly, Errani and the Slovak played against each other earlier this year in the final of Rio de Janeiro, when it was the former Roland Garros finalist to win in two sets.
